Living Shores

Building Stability for Delaware's Coasts
As development continues along Delaware’s coasts, resilient measures are required to ensure the stability of these vulnerable regions. Living shorelines offer a strong, ecologically favorable, and aesthetic solution to minimize the rate of coastal erosion in low-lying, coastal areas within the state. As erosion persists, the naturally found assemblage of shellfish, grasses, and reef material grows along the coast to provide continuous support year after year.

Protecting Critical Infrastructure
Our group is currently involved in developing living shoreline installations in Port Mahon and Lewes, DE, to protect critical infrastructure within the state. To ensure the suitability of these practices, DECO researchers are sampling the habitat provided by these systems to ensure not only structurally sound installations, but are beneficial to the local environment. We are also engaged in developing technologies and methods to monitor the health of the living components of these installations to inform the development of future installations.
